Formé en 1988 sous le nom de Scum, le groupe prit son nom actuel en 1992, avec le lancement de plusieurs démos, dont le notable The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter. Ce n'est toutefois qu'en 1998 que les 4 vikings (5 plus tard) sortiront leur premier vrai disque Once Sent From The Golden Hall. Plusieurs albums qui connurent de plus en plus de succès sortirent coup sur coup en 1999, 2001, 2002 et 2004. Leur dernier album date de septembre 2006, With Oden On Our Side, qui contient notamment la chanson Runes To My Memory.Bien qu'évoluant dans le milieu du métal (qu'on voit souvent(et d'une façon injustifiée)comme un milieu de "brutes") on peut noter chez Amon Amarth une réelle sensibilité artistique dans les textes ecrient par johann hegg faisaient référence selon ses dires à des expériences personelles. La particularité de la musique est aussi présente sur des titres comme "Under the northest Star" où la voix puissante de Johann Hegg se mêle à une mélodie très douce sachant donner à la musique un réel pouvoir évocatoire.
